‘Great Green Wall’ to come up along coast in Andhra

VIJAYAWADA: For the first time in decades, Andhra Pradesh has embarked on an ambitious plan to develop a ‘green fortress’ along its coastline with palm groves as a natural shield against cyclonic winds and coastal erosion.

Under the Great Green Wall of Andhra Pradesh initiative, the Forest Department has launched a drive to collect and plant 55 lakh palm seedlings across 5,499 hectares.

As part of the three-tier Great Green Wall, mangrove forests have been accorded priority as the first line of natural defence, while palm groves constitute the second tier.

The approach seeks to create a continuous and layered green buffer with different types of vegetation performing complementary ecological functions. The restoration of mangroves will help protect tidal and wetland ecosystems, while palm groves on suitable coastal stretches can provide an additional barrier against strong winds and soil erosion.

Notably, Andhra Pradesh’s natural coastal defences have faced severe degradation for decades with mangrove areas encroached upon, wetlands converted into illegal ponds and lakhs of palm trees felled for various purposes.

Against this backdrop, Deputy Chief Minister (Environment and Forest) Pawan Kalyan has laid emphasis on strengthening AP’s natural coastal protection systems. 

Palm belt to shield AP coast, curb soil loss & boost biodiversity

The Great Green Wall initiative seeks to revive these vital ecosystems by expanding mangrove forests and establishing extensive palm groves.

The palm belt will act as a natural windbreak, helping reduce the impact of strong coastal winds, stabilise vulnerable soils and check erosion, while restoring biodiversity and ecological resilience along the coastline of AP.

The initiative assumes significance in view of Andhra Pradesh’s long and vulnerable coastline, where several coastal communities remain exposed to cyclones, stormy winds, soil erosion and other climate-related risks. Strengthening natural barriers is expected to complement conventional disaster-management and coastal-protection measures, while simultaneously restoring degraded ecosystems.

Against the target of 55 lakh palm seedlings, around 13 lakh have already been collected by the Forest Department with the participation of rural communities and various organisations. It has also completed the planting of 1.65 lakh palm seedlings, involving the Panchayat Raj and Revenue Departments, school students and local people.

Pawan Kalyan has called upon local communities, educational institutions, government and private and voluntary organisations to participate actively in the collection and planting of palm seedlings.

The broader objective of the initiative is to restore Andhra Pradesh’s natural wealth while advancing the State’s goal of 50 per cent green cover, ecological restoration and conservation of natural resources. The Great Green Wall is thus being positioned as a long-term environmental initiative aimed at rebuilding the coastline’s natural resilience.

An effective natural barrier

Palm groves can serve as a natural protective barrier along the coastline. Their tall and sturdy trunks and dense foliage help break the force of strong winds, reducing wind speeds before they reach coastal villages and agricultural areas. Their strong and extensive root systems bind the soil, helping stabilise sandy and loose coastal terrain and reduce wind and water erosion. During cyclones and severe weather, a broad belt of palm trees can act as a buffer, complementing mangroves and other coastal vegetation.

At the same time, palm groves provide shelter and habitat for birds, insects and other wildlife, strengthening biodiversity and improving the overall ecological resilience of coastal areas.
