SL CJ spurns compromise bid by government

11th December 2012 11:28 AM

Given the widespread opposition both at home and abroad to the impeachment of the Sri Lankan Chief Justice, Shirani Bandaranayake, some leading persons are trying to bring about a patch up between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the CJ so that the country’s institutional framework is preserved and its international image does not get tarnished further. But success is evading these “secret” moves.

“The government wants a patch up, but the Chief Justice has rejected the moves,” a source close to the CJ told Express on Monday. The CJ firmly held on to her stand that she was not guilty of any of the 14 charges, including the three on which she was indicted by the government-dominated Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) last week, the source said.

However, the Tamil daily, Sudar Oli, reported that the CJ had discussed the question of rapprochement with Lanka’s top Buddhist monks, the Mahanayakes or Chief Incumbents of the Malwatte and Asgirya chapters of the Maha Sangha, in Kandy on Sunday. It further said unofficial representatives of the President and the CJ were to meet in Colombo last Thursday, but it did not happen.

Meanwhile, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka called for a day’s strike in the CJ’s support on Wednesday.

The President has crossed the line he should not have crossed. Trying to impeach the chief Justice should be the last line he had crossed He should be impeached and sent 'out'

M.R. has gone insane. No one with an iota of brain would approve the destruction he and his clan do to the whole country.

Why everyone is blaming MR, why is that everyone doesn't blame his mighty bros, mightier sons and mightiest better half behind most of his deeds.

This woman would object for a patch up, but just like that disgraced general would not mind enjoying the privileges of the position, if the govt lets her to continue. She has already displayed her intelligence by seeking refuge behind the same shameless opposition politicians and lawyers who opposed her or her husband, another state official who thought that he is indispensable at some point of time. The manner she acted after the allegations came up itself is an insult on the judiciary, leave alone the accusations. She became a cause for commotions in the country during the past few weeks. It is a pity she gave that notorious Mervin Silva a chance to do the right thing by requesting her to gracefully step down.

Aravinda. At a time when making an acting appointment of a CJ when she has not stepped down, what do you think will be the outcome of her stepping down? If she steps down, President will appoint a new CJ. As she has stepped down the need to send her home by impeachment will not arise and it will be acceptance of guilt. The problem faced by the government will be over. President can boast about his kindness by not acting on the PSC report. What a way to serve his purpose of getting rid of the CJ and appointing his sucker choice, and become the 'upasaka mahattaya' (pious gentleman)? You are making the same demand of Mervin, Gunadasa Amarasekara, Rohitha Abeygunawadana, Mahinda Amaraweera etc. CJ is foolish if she agrees with you. I am not for CJ or President, but am for independence of the Judiciary and she should remain in her post for that sake.
