The New Jersey barrier island that has hosted legions of vacationers for generations and was home to the "Jersey Shore" cast is a scene of devastation.
The Seaside Heights boardwalk made famous on the MTV reality show is in ruins. The waterfront rides on Casino Pier were washed away and are gone. The park's roller coaster is sitting in the ocean.
Officials say about 300 people have been removed since superstorm Sandy passed. About 70 remain and will be ordered to leave and not allowed to return until at least the weekend.
John Messner says he had 10 feet (3 meters) of water in his house within minutes of the island's dunes being breached by the waves.
He says "it was like being at ground zero."
