IDOL TREASURE: Vellore museum curator K Saravannan taking a closer look at the head of the Lord Vishnu’s statue, which was found by a group of boys in Kalanipakkam | Express
The head of a statue of Lord Vishnu, believed to be around five hundred years old, was found on patta land in Kalanipakkam, near Vellore on Sunday. It was added to the treasure trove of the Vellore Government Museum on Monday.
A group of boys, who were playing on the land of Dhavamani, a resident of Puducolony in Kalanipakkam, found the head portion of the statue while digging nearly a pit on Sunday. The boys informed the village elders, who in turn informed tasildar Dharmalingam. On information, revenue officials and curator of Vellore Government Museum K Saravanan inspected the spot.
They dug around the place to look for the body of the statue or other statues but no statue was found, said the officials.
“The head of Lord Vishnu measures 40 cms in height and it belongs to Vijayanagara period,” said the curator. Collector Ajay Yadav directed the revenue officials to hand over the head to the State government museum as per Indian Treasure Trove Act, 1878.
He also directed the curator to display it in the museum for public view.
