A thriving exam marks racket involving some faculty members and officials has come to light in the premier Anna University in Chennai.
The racket has helped children of influential parents who failed in semester examinations to pass with flying colours in two of the university’s four renowned campuses — the College of Engineering in Guindy (CEG) and the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) in Chromepet.
Rumours about the shocking academic malpractice that flourished through pseudo revaluation exercises were widely doing the rounds for the past three years. However, for the first time, evidence has emerged in black and white.
A couple of junior faculty members have over the past month admitted that they revalued the answer papers of some failed students and gave them pass marks on the instructions of an university Examination Department official. The official has since been moved out, but not as punishment.
One of the assistant professors in the Dept of Computer Technology at the MIT campus has addressed his letter, in the form of a confession, to the Chief Minister’s Cell. For some strange reason, the other assistant professor at the Ramanujan Computing Centre in CEG has addressed his letter to an official of a quasi-government body who is well-versed with the state of affairs.
Naming a university official who abused his position in the Examination Department, the MIT assistant professor has said that the former “gave me the papers and asked me to give pass mark for some of the papers. I have been given the subjects from their first semester and other semesters.”
Alarmingly, in April, the official had given him answer papers of subjects which have nothing do with the evaluator’s expertise. The assistant professor, whose specialisation is in computers, has said he was asked to evaluate among others Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics papers and “many more subjects which I do not remember.”
Similarly, the faculty member at the CEG has said he gave pass marks to students in six subjects during Nov-Dec 2009 and April-May 2010. “In future, I cannot do this kind of mistakes where it affects the brand of my university (sic),” he said in the letter.
On March 5, 2011, Express had published a report ‘Revaluation route helps influential students excel’ highlighting how senior professors had rued that VVIP kids who were irregular to classes mysteriously passed with flying colours. Even HoDs were unaware of how the weakest students cleared their examinations.

This should not surprise anybody. This kind of stuff has been going on in Anna University, University of Madras( those day's name) and the 10th Std and +2 Exams Department in Madras. As far as i know this kinds of fraud was done even some 30 years back. There was always some fellows who would take money and get things done.....right from lab attendants, to staff and faculty and to University of Madras Senate members. Each job had a price and the cut was split up within the guys in the racket. So, let us not pretend that nothing is happening and that everything is fine and dandy. Some of the guys who get jobs at the University of Madras Senate, buy those jobs and make good money by getting cut from admissions and mark sheet fudging racket. In Andhra & Karnataka, education corruption is far worse than TN. I can write a whole book on things that happened. I am not making this all up. India reeks of scams and corruption that has got into all parts of society.

Dear Venkat: I am surprised to learn that this sort of thing was prevalent 30 years ago. Would you be willing to have an email exchange about this? If you agree please email me at your convenience. I look forward to hearing from you.

This is stupid act, who ever it may be. General People had faith in the University of Madras, as a Prestigious institution, but these, guys have just committed a blunder and raised doubts on its integrity and loyalty to not only to the students but also the people in general. These things have started happening in India, only, after these, so called politicians making ramphant efforts to bring in reservations and spoiled the system. It's high time we understand and the apex court to put stringent actions to those concerned, irrespective who ever it may be.

Mr.Caledonia,do you think this is fun? You are asking me to discuss with you things that happened. What good is it anyway? The Govt( that is incidentally headed by Corrupt people!) can launch a probe and can find out what happened and what is going on. They will have a panel, enquiry and so on. But it will all be a sham in the end. Such is India with the Cancer of Corruption spread all across. As far as TN is concerned Education wise, the whole system has not rotted away as in AP and Karnataka. There are some very fine teachers and some honest people even now in TN. Likewise there are some Rotten apples everywhere who do things for money. As long as you have Influential guys, VVIPs and Political Goons hanging outside Education Departments, Admissions Offices, and Marksheet Departments with boxes of cash, nothing will ever change anywhere. Things will remain as crappy as they are. That is the truth!
