Kin of runaway girl, cops face mob fury

Three relatives of a girl from Dharmapuri who had allegedly eloped on Tuesday night with a boy from Villupuram were beaten up and the SIsub-inspector and head constable and the trio were locked in a room, as they were in search of the couple, on Wednesday.

Elavarasi (16), daughter of Lakshmanan of Arur village, Dharmapuri had fallen in love with Gandhi (23), son of Vellaiyan of Aruvangkadu village, Villupuram and eloped on Tuesday night. Her father Lakshmanan lodged a missing complaint with Kottapatti police.

Sub-inspector Sampath, head constable Annadurai, along with the girl’s father and relatives Elumalai and Manickam, went to Aruvangakadu  in search of her. They went to Maniyarpalayam village to inquire with Gandhi’s relative, Shakthivel. When he was taken to a police vehicle, around 20 people came on bikes and surrounded the car.

As SI and constable were in mufti, people did not recognise them, police said, “They locked up the SI and constable in a room and tied the three persons to a pole and thrashed them. Kallvarayan hills police rushed to the spot and rescued them and registered a case.
