TN short by 4,000 MW

Tamil Nadu is facing a shortage of 4,000 MW, as it is receiving only 8,000 MW against the requirement of 12,000 MW, State Education Minister P Palaniappan said today.

Only 49 per cent of the power generated by Neyveli Lignite Corporation was used by Tamil Nadu. Rest of the power was distributed to other States, he said.

He was addressing the 130th Birthday celebrations of Poet Subramanya Bharathi, organised at Bharathiar University here, which was also used for the launch of National level awareness programme on Non-conventional energy.

"To come out from the present power outages, we have to take steps to tap renewable energy like solar, which was also clean and eco-friendly," he said.

Agriculture Minister S Damodaran also spoke.
