CM: Make NLUO a leading law school

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday called upon the authorities of National Law University Odisha (NLUO) here to make it a leading law school of the country even as he committed all support of the State Government for its development.

 Inaugurating the new campus of NLUO, Naveen said the Government had already sanctioned ` 78 crore to the university and budget provisions have been made for infrastructure development during the current financial year.

 The Chief Minister said the NLUO was an achievement for the State as it would churn out top-quality law professionals. He expressed appreciation for the fact that NLUO is different from other law universities by its focus on justice studies rather than traditional legal studies. It has set up specialised centres in Mining Law, Energy Law and Food Law and exploring areas that have not been touched by other law schools, he said.  On the occasion, Justice Althamus Kabir of Supreme Court said law was never static and hence teaching of law should include dynamic methodologies.  The NLUO, one of the youngest law schools of the country, started functioning in 2009 from Chahata. It was shifted to its new academic campus, spread over 60 acre, at Naraj.

 With the fourth batch of students drawn from about 17 states, the university is touted as the third-generation law school, more research-oriented and seeking to widen horizons of the students and sensitising them socially and morally.

 Among others, Chief Justice V Gopalagowda of the Orissa High Court, Justice Ananga Patnaik of Supreme Court, former Supreme Court judge Justice AK Ganguly and Vice- Chancellor of NLUO Prof. Chandra Krishnamurthy were present.
