Controversies ‘mark’ HSC exam

Dibyanshu Kar of Oupada High School in Balasore district has topped the annual High School Certificate examinations, results of which were announced by the Board of Secondary Education on Thursday amidst the fracas over leak of the results, particularly the toppers’ list on Wednesday night.  As high as 67.90 percent of the students  across all the streams have cleared the exam this year. The pass percentage in the regular stream was 70.80, posting more than 4 per cent increase over 2011.

While the entire examination process this year has been hit by unprecedented situations from the question theft leading to rescheduling to problems during evaluation, the BSE was dragged into another controversy over people accessing results and toppers’ list on Wednesday night itself. The toppers’ list was, in fact, accessed and published on a social network heaping more embarrassment on the BSE authorities.

“Apparently, it is an event of coincidence, with one person accessing the toppers’ list, during the time the online result publication system was put on trial. We have sought a report on the matter from the CSM Technologies, which was entrusted with the responsibility”, BSE president Satyakam Mishra said. Dibyanshu Kar has scored the highest marks __ 588 (98 per cent). Ankit Mahapatra of Saraswati Vidya Madir, Boudh, came second with 583 marks. Sthitaprajna Nath Sharma of Ravenshaw Collegiate School, Cuttack ranks third in the list with 582 marks. Twenty students have featured in the Top 10 positions this year. Boys outperformed girls in the exams recording a pass percentage of 73.17 as against 68.55 by the latter. As many as 4,45,814 students had appeared under regular stream this year of which 3,10,276 passed. As many as 67,235 secured first division, while 91,190 and 1,51,555 got second and third divisions, respectively.Nuapada has emerged  as the top performing district with a pass percentage of whopping 81.87 followed by Dhenkanal at 80.30 per cent and Khurda at 78.34 per cent. Gajapati has become the worst performing one with 54.31 per cent pass rate, marginally better than Nabrangpur at 54.40 per cent.Students of the SC, ST and backward sections have also done exceptionally well this year with a pass percentage of 61.33  among the SCs. The pass percentage among the ST students has been 63.04.

In the ex-regular stream, 46.01 per cent of the 49,559 students have cleared the exams with 152 securing first, 1,921 second and 19,086 third divisions. Last year, the pass percentage was 37.45. In the correspondence course (CC) regular stream, 38.23 per cent of the students passed, while in the CC ex-regular course, the pass percentage is 31.79. 139 of the 8,268 schools secured  nil results. About 240 schools have secured 100 per cent success rate. As per the school categories, Government schools have registered 70.39 per cent pass rate, aided institutions 71.24, bloc grant schools 70.84 and unaided schools 72.64 per cent, BSE president Dr Satyakam Mishra said.
