Estranged tusker attacks man

Tension ran high at Salepur and Mahanga blocks on Thursday after a tusker strayed into the area from Vairi forests. The tusker was sighted at Japakuda area under Salepur block on Thursday morning.
The animal caught a 65-year-old man with its trunk and threw him on the ground injuring him grievously. He has been admitted to the SCB Medical in Cuttack.
Receiving information, forest officials with the help of local police drove the tusker back into Bairi forest by evening.
“The tusker was ousted from its herd and staying alone. It strayed into the locality on Wednesday night. However, it passed Nrutanga in Mahanga by crossing Birupa river and the NH near Bandalo and went back to Bairi forest on Thursday evening,” said DFO Sudarsan Behera.
