Amend ordinance: Mahila Congress

Kerala Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee came out against the Devaswom ordinance of the UDF Government stating that the new ordinance would prevent the representation of women members in the Devaswom Boards.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mahila Congress president Bindhu Krishna demanded that the Devaswom ordinance be amended.

She also threatened to carry out strong protest if the State Government fails to amend the ordinance. “If the UDF Government is not ready to reconsider its decision then we will be forced to approach the Governor,” she said.

Bindhu Krishna also made the demand in a letter she wrote to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

“At a time when the society and the Congress party in particular is supporting women’s representation in all fields, the State Government’s move to deny representation of women in the Boards will have far reaching consequences.

“Even if the number of devotees who visit temples in the state are taken, women devotees will be higher,” she pointed out in the letter.

She also demanded that the State Government should do all that is needed to accommodate women representatives in the Boards.

“If required, the number of members in the Boards should be increased to accommodate a woman representative,” she said.
