Parents give away infant to orphanage

 Sarita and Shankar Jadhav of Bhikku Naik Tanda of Konchavaram in Chincholi taluk handed over their eight-month-old infant to a government-run orphanage in Gulbarga on Friday as they claimed they could not maintain the family owing to acute poverty.

 Meanwhile, their efforts to hand over their another four-year-old daughter did not materialise as she escaped and hid in a Tanda.

 On Friday morning, Savitri Bai, (4) was found weeping.

 Her parents Sarita and Shankar Jadhav had been contemplating for over a week to hand over their third and fourth daughters, Savitri Bai and eight-month-old Sonubai, to a governmentrun orphanage.

 The couple openly said they want to have a male child.

 Savitri Bai, who heard the talk, was upset for the last three days and hid in the Tanda.

 Tukaram Pawar, a social activist from the Banjara community advised the parents not hand over their children to the orphanage.

 The parents finally handed over Sonu Bai to Child Development Project Officer Mohammad Rafi Shakale.

 The CDPO brought the parents and the infant to Amulya Shishu Graha on Friday and handed over the infant.

 Tanda Development Corporation chairman Basavaraj Naik had assured the couple that government would help them take up income-generating activities.

 However, the couple were doubtful about the government help.
