‘Make Tirupati free of liquor’

24th June 2012 09:18 AM

YSRC MLA Bhumana Karunakara Reddy said that he would go on a hunger strike from Sunday demanding the government to declare Tirupati a liquor-free town.

The government should not only ban liquor but also not allot any wine shops.  ‘’This is my first step in protecting the sanctity of the temple town as the MLA and will continue to fast till the government concedes to my demand,’’ said the newly elected MLA. Noting that there is no liquor shop within the radius of 6 km in Shirdi, he wondered why the government was dilly-dallying over declaring the town a liquor-free zone. Speaking to media persons, here on Saturday, Reddy said he took up the liquor issue first as he had received numerous complaints from women during his electioneering  that their families were ruined due to consumption of liquor by their family members.

Even the pilgrims are inconvenienced with drunkards at bus stand, railway station and other public places, he added.

The MLA said that the chief minister had failed to keep up his promise to release Rs 400 crore for various development works in Tirupati constituency.
