MLC polls to land TJAC in a predicament

The Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) which is spearheading the Telangana movement and striving for political unity in the struggle for statehood is likely to run into rough weather over the forthcoming MLC elections, with its political constituents showing resolve to contest the polls independently.

 The term of 26 MLCs in the State Legislative Council is going to end soon and elections are likely to be held in the first week of February to elect new members, three of them from Telangana districts - one graduate and two teachers’ constituencies.

 TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao and TJAC chairman Prof.

 M Kodandaram met after a long gap recently and issued a joint statement that they would be working together.

 Kodandaram said they would support all the programes of the TRS, including the Telangana Samarabheri Sabha to be held at Suryapet in Nalgonda district.

 The TJAC has also moved closer to the BJP after the Parkala byelections and Kodandaram participated in the programmes organised by the party on the Telangana issue within and outside the state.

 Under these circumstances, the TRS announced former TNGO president K Swami Goud, a Sangh Parivar activist, as its candidate for the Karimnagar Graduates Constituency.

 At the same time, the TRS has also declared the BJP as a communal party and expressed its reservations to work with the saffron party in the region.

 On the other hand, the BJP decided to go it alone in the MLC elections, without waiting for the support of other political parites or Telangana organisations.
