NHRC orders probe into Manapad firing incident

The NHRC has asked its Director General (Investigation) to ascertain facts about the death of one G Antony John, a 48-year old fisherman of Manapad, and injuries to several others in the police firing in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu during the anti-KKNPP protest.
John was killed on September 10 after police opened fire to clear a highway blocked by demonstrators protesting against the nuclear power plant.
Supreme Court advocate and rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy moved the NHRC urging it to intervene in the issue of police firing.
