The Meghalaya government Saturday suspended police training instructor Pradip Borah after he made two constable recruits drink the urine of fellow trainees, police said.
Borah is posted with the 2nd Meghalaya Police Battalion in Goeragre in West Garo Hills, around 300 km from here.
The incident occurred after the duo fought with a fellow recruit during lunch at a community kitchen.
"The delinquent inspector of 2nd Meghalaya police battalion has been placed under suspension based on findings of preliminary findings," Meghalaya director general of police N. Ramachandran told IANS.
Earlier, Home Minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh said strong action will be taken against the accused, if found guilty.
"This kind of inhuman punishment is not allowed to be taken by anyone, whether in the police force or anywhere," Lyngdoh told IANS.
He said the battalion commandant is conducting an inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the incident. "If the instructor is found guilty, we would surely take stern action against him," the home minister said.
Borah asked three recruits to urinate in bottles and forced the two recruits to drink it in the presence of 600 constables during the night roll call, a police official said.
Taking suo moto action, Meghalaya Police authorities have replaced Borah and sought an explanation from him regarding the incident.
"This sort of punishment is unacceptable. He could have punished them with an extra drill," N. Rajamarthandan, commandant of 2nd Meghalaya Police battalion, said.
