Members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) may be in for their last lesson in political history from one of their oldest in-house practitioner-guru, often called the walking encyclopedia of the party.
Bestowing an unprecedented honour on Pranab Mukherjee, the Congress has convened a CWC meeting on Monday to bid him farewell.
And Pranab, who is the UPA’s presidential candidate, is expected to be feted by the party’s topmost decision-making body. The meeting is also expected to take stock of the present political situation in the light of UPA ally Mamata Banerjee’s decision not to back Pranab.
In fact, Mamata is yet to make up her mind on whether she will support rival candidate and former Congressman P A Sangma or will finally come round to back Pranab. The decision probably has more salience for the post-presidential poll scenario and the future shape of the UPA because the numbers for the poll itself look sealed.
It is also somewhat ironic that Pranab, the ace trouble-shooter for the party and the UPA Government, will be brainstorming at the CWC virtually till the last minute.
