26th January 2013 03:38 AM

Expressing dissatisfaction over the number of people from South India figuring in the Padma awards list for 2013, southern playback singer Sreeramamurthy Janaki Friday refused to accept Padma Bhushan award announced for her on the eve of 64th Republic Day,

"I'm saddened by the fact that north India has been given more prominence than south India. I'm extremely disappointed and I refuse to accept the award," Janaki told IANS.

The 74-year old veteran made her singing debut in 1957 Tamil film "Vidhiyin Vilayattu". She has crooned over 15,000 songs in a career spanning five decades across all southern languages and in Hindi.

She has a long association with singer S.P. Balasubramanyam. The two have sung more than 1,000 songs together.

She has won four National Awards and the prestigious "Kalamamani" state award of Tamil Nadu.

Smt.Janaki's refusal to accept the feather of "Padma" need not necessarily be viewed as her ploy to hit headlines. The much acclaimed singer of all lingua franca, has scored in triggering a national debate over the criteria of selection of awardees, as the antecedents mostly go to show the strong territorial bias. Let us not be apprehensive over the emotional clevage likely to be stoked by Janaki's decision between the people of north and south , who otherwise cohabit harmoniously. Sri.Bharathi Raja showed the way who earlier stood with the cause of Srilankan Tamils, massacred in lacs through Indian bullets which is why he returned the national award. Some refusals of sort , slap at discrimination, and gross injustice perpetrated under the very nose of ruling dispensatioin. Better the centre wakes up to the bone of contention lying behind some decisions, albeit earning mixed responses from very many quarters.

for the people of delhi. india is delhi and surronding states.all other regions are given step motherly treatment from day one of the nation forming.there is no national cultural feeling.south indians, bengali north east are referred as madrasi and ne people as,chiknis. maximum talented people are in south, east,ne and west but that is not accepted by the hindi belt.

No padma awards should be given to cricket and film personalities. They get name fame and wealth because of of their profession. These awards to be given to silent workers in the field of agriculture, science, folk arts, ecologists, wild life savers, forest protectors.......so on, because these people never seek publicity and several of them are poor.

I am from east india but lived all my life in the BIMARU States of the Country. I fully agree with the fact that people of south India have not got their due in our country. In fact except for north indians the people from other parts of India do not get accepted because of a severe language problem. But one silver lining in the cloud is that south indians get tenanted premises all over the country very easily as north indians donot trust north indians while renting their house[lighter vein] What if we started a movement of reconciliation by apologising to our fellow citizens living in south India and then file PIL before the Supreme Court before it gets too late. I am scared that foreign forces can take advantage if this situation is allowed to linger on. Subhro Sanyal

Be it south Indian artists, freedom fighters, etc., there is a systematic block out by the north Indian dominated central government. The awards given to various personalities do not have any system or thinking. It is ad hoc, biased and politically motivated. rouges, animal killers and others connected to top Delhi politicians get all sorts of awards and medals. south India is always left out, neglected. It is not so important that this award would gratify Janakiamma. The award would get more weight age when given to people like her with incomparable talent. Tamilians would never forget the injustice done to Vani Jayaram, who in her first stellar performance created butterfly in many singers' stomach. the dirty politics sidelined her from West and north. How ever, she was not worried. Ms. Jakaki's decision is bold and highly respected. We all love and respect her.
