Congress president Sonia Gandhi Sunday promised a group of young protesters that speedy action would be taken against those who brutally raped a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus.
Talking to reporters, the protesters quoted her as saying that the government was taking serious note of their demands.
"She said the law and order situation will change very soon and the victim will get justice very soon," one of the protesters who met Gandhi told the media.
"She said sections 307 and 201 (of Indian Penal Code) will be added to the charges against the accused."
Section 307 relates to attempt to murder and 201 pertains to causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information.
The protesters refused to give their names to the media, saying they were members of the "common public". They, however, added that the protests sweeping the city centre would continue.
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Minister of State for Home R.P.N. Singh and party leader Renuka Chowdhary were present at the meeting.
This was the second time Sonia Gandhi met a section of young men and women who have been protesting noisily against Dec 16 rape that left the victim battling for life in hospital.
Gandhi came out of her residence past midnight and assured the protesters that "justice will be delivered".
According to one who was present, she spent about 20 minutes with 40-50 students and said she was "with them".
On Sunday morning, according to some students, she met a few women protesters and assured them her support.
On Saturday, thousands tried to enter Raisina Hill, which leads to the presidential palace. Police used batons and tear gas and sprayed water to disperse the crowds.

I dont understand why the readers are now blaming Arvind Kejriwal. At least Arvind is fighting. So what if media is paying attention to him. So what if he has political ambitions. At the end of the day we are frustrated Indian Citizens who stupidly believe that Mohmohan is clean, Sonia is our citizen, and Rahul is intelligent, Robert Vadra is private citizen and we vote for them. We continue to keep this party in power but then when we are frustrated we blame others. Why not blame ourselves. Who told you to vote for Sheila Dixit twice. Who told you to vote for Manmohan Singh twice even though NDA was doing a phenomenal job. Why did you remove Chandrababu Naidu when he did a great job and we voted for YSR and Jagan to loot us with 60,000 Crores under Corrupt Khangress Rule. So who is responsibile for all of this? We threw away NDA from Delhi due to rise of price of Onion but keep bringing back these idiots even after the highest inflation. So blame yourself Indian voters.

Please dont blame the Indian Voters. Most of us dont vote. Then who vote, muslims and Christians will vote for Khangress and Hindus are divided. Khangress loves this. They will continue to get elected since they can always get 140-180 seats, then they can buy another 40-80 seats, and then can use CBI to pressure Mulayam and Mayawati to vote for them. So next 100 years belongs to Khangress. So my suggestion. Reverse migration. More Bangladeshi Muslims have come to India illegally. Time has come for Hindus to move to Bangladesh and take over that country since in India we are doomed. Uninterrupted illegal conversion by Christian missionaries in the name of Jesus will happen by paying poor Hindus and Muslims are running Bollywood and other places using Dawood;s money. Son of Sardar has sold the country. So who is on your side. If RSS or NDA talks we think they are nonsecular. So go figure...vote for Rahul and then his son and then his son.

Many rape cases have not been reported. Many have not seen even the FIR. such is the status under this mafia's rule. when quick justice is thought for the rape victims, would it include punishing the MPs who have rape charges pending against them, who still are roaming shamelessly all over!

Why Prime Minister had not instructed the Home Minister to visit the place where the public protest is happening all these days? The whole gamut of young women expect some sort of a candid assurance from a very high level, preferably from somebody at the level of a statesman. What prevented our P.M or the Home Minister to appear before the crowd for consoling the angry youngsters prior to assuring one of the best refurbished laws that clamp stringent punishments to culprits engaged in atrocities against women? It was a chance to build up the image of the government at this critical time. Evidently this reluctance proved the dearth of statesmanship with the regime! It was fine that though belated, at least Sonia Gandhi as Congress president and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi could prod into the issue by inviting a group of protesters for knowing their sentiments as well as suggestions for recommendations apparently meant for the Parliamentary Standing Committee or the judicial commission
