Popular Carnatic vocalist
Nithyashree's husband Mahadevan today allegedly committed
suicide by jumping into a river in the city, in a blow to her
amid the annual music season in which she is a star performer.
Mahadevan, who came in a car, jumped into the Adyar river
from the Kotturpuram Bridge, a locality where the couple
resided, police said quoting eyewitnesses.
Police and Fire and Rescue Services arrived at the spot on
information and fished out the body of the 45-year old
Mahadevan. The couple have two daughters.
They said the reason for Mahadevan's decision to end his
life was under investigation.
The tragedy struck Nithyashree in the midst of the
"Margazhi" music festival now on in the city.
Nithyashree, who comes from an illustrious family of
carnatic musicians, is grand daughter of late D K Pattammal,
often hailed as one of the trinity of carnatic vocalists --
the other two being late M S Subbulakshmi and the late M L
Vasanthakumari.
The month-long festival held at sabhas and concert halls in
December offers a veritable feast for connoisseurs of Carnatic
music with the top artists and budding ones giving
performances.
Nithyashree has also sung in some Tamil movies.

It is very unfortunate that such a talented singer should have to go through this trauma of losing her husband at a young age. Our hearts go out to her and her children in this hour of grief. May Providence give her the strength to bear the loss.

Tragic loss. Unbelievable in the middle of Chennai Music Season - the glorious heights which Nityashree has reached and achieved in her divinity to Almighty! Why such a tragedy to this noble daughter of the Indian Soil. To achieve glory in music that too in Carnatic music at such a young age itself is Almighty's Blessing and the blessings of elders. May Almighty give the family strength and courage to face this crisis. Pray for her good health and strengthen her mind to face the future.

One should not commit suicide like this for person of high caliber when ordinary people with very low financial profile or social profile live on streets with their family even inside the water conduits in Bombay and Bangalore etc. Why these people or doing like this, I am unable to understand. They are very good people socially and in this musical world. I am very sad. RIP.

A detailed investigation must be done to ascertain the cause of his suicide. His close relatives and friends must be questioned.

Did shri mahadevan think of his wife and two daugthers and their future when he took this extreme step?it is unbelievable that thinking and rational people are committing such rash acts when they should be infact giving courage and hope to the less forutnates. we can only pray to ShriRama to give the mental courage to smt nityashree and her two children to withstand this unbearable tragedy.
