Rajasthan witnesses its first ever right to recall vote

13th December 2012 09:18 AM

For the first time in Rajasthan, an election for recalling an elected chairman of a municipal body was held in Mangrol Municipality area of Baran district today.
In accordance to the the Rajasthan Municipal Act 2009 that furnishes the voter with the 'Right to recall', people of Mangrol Municipality voted in the election today.
The motion for right to recall against the Chairman Ashok Jain, was passed in January for his alleged under performance.
In November 2009, Jain, who had contested as an independent candidate, was elected as the chairman of Mangrol Municipality Board.
In the first ever public referendum in state, 65.71 per cent of the total of 16,735 exercised their franchise.
A total of 11,129 votes were polled at 21 poling centers in Mangrol to exercise the "right to recall".
Polling officer Dharm Raj Meena said the polling was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported.
He said the result would be declared on December 14.
If more than half the total number of voters favours the recall, the elected position of chairman will be nullified.
Jain, who recently joined Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party said "I am an honest man and due to nexus of Congress and BJP corporators I have been dragged into the poll to Right to Recall."
The result would decide whether I am wrong or right, he said.
Under the provision of Right To Recall of an elected representative of civic bodies, the polling was held for which a Gazette notification was issued in September.
For the polling EVMS were used at 21 polling centers and the voters were asked to select one out of two choice one in the favor of the motion and the other against the motion.
Additional SP Baran, Prathvi Singh Rathor said polling was peaceful.
"The EVMS have been sealed and counting would start from tomorrow," he said.

Really a silver lining on a dark cloud of murky politics. However,in this particular case, circumstances,as understood from the article,go to say, there is a calculated excercise by the main parties like Congress &BJP ,who are all out probably to dethrone this independent candidate.A natural doubt arises if all the present voters are NOT belonging to these parties who had bitten the dust at the hustings earlier.Anyhow, the Right to Recall procedure,if it is honestly devoid of opportunities to misuse,is surely welcome.
