The Supreme Court today reserved its order on a plea seeking a stay on commissioning of the Koodankulam nuclear plant till all safety measures are put in place.
Following a marathon arguments spanning the last three months, a bench of justices K S Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra reserved its order on the plea that questioned the safety and security of people, the environmental impact and other issues linked to the controversial plant.
The court was hearing a bunch of petition filed by anti-nuclear activists challenging the project on the ground that safety measures recommended for the plant by an expert body has not been put in place. They also raised various questions pertaining to the disposal of nuclear waste and the plant's impact on environment.
The Centre, Tamil Nadu government and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd, which operates the plant, had refuted all the allegations on safety and security aspects.
They submitted that the plant is completely safe and can withstand any kind of natural disaster and external terrorist attack.
The bench on the first date of hearing on September 13 had refused to stay the loading of fuel for the plant but had agreed to examine the risk associated with the project, saying the safety of people in its vicinity is its key concern.
"Public safety is of prime importance. There are poor people living in the vicinity of the plant and they should know their lives would be protected," the apex court had said.

The Centre, Tamil Nadu government and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd, which operates the plant, had refuted all the allegations on safety and security aspects because they do not know scientific aspects of these issues of life and death as they are advised by ecologically illiterate experts whose fields of specilisation is mechanical engineering and fields other than environmental sciences and engineeering.such experts do not qualify as experts as per sections 45 and 51 of the Indian Evidence Act and are working in violation of Art.51A[g] of the constitution of india. For more scientific details on myths of Nuclear safety, see articles by experts under the web site below "DiaNuke.org" and other articles on kudankulam nuclear plant as a time bomb over Tamilnadu under the Google search engine and its links.

"Public safety is of prime importance. There are poor people living in the vicinity of the kudankulam nuclear plant and they should know their lives would be protected," the the highly humane judges of the apex court had said.It is true that lakhs of people have suffered serious forms of ill -health including cancer due to their exposure to excessive levels of nuclear radiation from the Explosions at Chernobyl in 1986 and Fukushima in 2011. Japan has so far planned to spend Rs.3 to 4 lakh crores tompay compensation to victims of nuclear pollution due to accident. If kudankulam reacxtor costs Rs.14,000 crores and if its costs of compensatrion due to an accident were to be twenty times higher, who will pay sucxh costs except the government only by imposing taxes on the public who are silent spectators at this naked rape of Nature in the name of development. These heinous acts perpetrated by the chief ministers and the prime minister must be stroppeds by patriotic workers among politicians
