GM ignites a new Spark

General Motors India recently launched the spruced-up version of its entry level small car Spark. More refreshing and stylish than its predecessor, the Spark is GM’s latest ploy to get to the mass and put it right on top in the small car segment. Here is a look at this new small wonder.

Chevrolet Spark has seen its share of success in India; it was GM’s first model in the compact car segment which took on directly the likes of Maruti 800, Alto. For a while the company didn’t do much with the model except launch fuel-efficient LPG variant but then it also realised the need to spruce the Spark up. So what we have now is a Spark with new exterior and interior updates. The exterior is quite bold and prominent thanks to the twin-port grille, new clear lens headlamps, lots of chrome on the front grille and bold graphics. There is no major big exterior change at the moment but these new attributes do make it better.

The interior, however, has been completely refurbished. There is all new premium upholstery, new door pad design, ‘wing inspired’ speedometer, a new uniform ‘Dark Urban’ colour that flows uniformly inside the cabin, a new instrument cluster that uses both analogue and digital variables. According to Lowell Paddock, President & Managing Director, GM India, “The all-new Spark will build on the success of its predecessors and stand out against the competition in India’s rapidly growing small car market.”

The new Spark is powered by a frugal and efficient S-TEC four-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine that delivers a peak power of 63 PS @ 5,400 rpm and peak torque of 90.3 Nm @ 4,200 rpm.

GM also launched the new Spark LPG variant with a sequential injection-type LPG kit. The all new Spark is priced between Rs 3.26 lakh and Rs 4.10 lakh ex-showroom Delhi which still makes it quite an affordable option.
