Ties between flora and Feng Shui

Plants and their positions do contribute to the positive feel of any space. Plants play an important role in Fengshui because they are said to bring Life force or Prana into the home and keep the air clean. The energy of the plants varies depending upon the shape and size of the plant.

Upright plants with slightly pointed leaves are considered yang and are generally used in South Corners and in narrow areas to move the energy. Round leaves and drooping leaves are used in calming down strong energy and are preferred in North Corners. Plants should be strong and healthy; avoid those which shed leaves profusely. The color and shape of the plants also correspond to the Five elements viz. Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal. Ensure that you do not place spiky plants towards your sitting direction or your chair. One of the plants considered very good in Fengshui is the Chinese Money (Crassula Ovata) plant whose leaves are stiff and round and are believed to resemble coins which are Metal energy. Placing them in the West, Northwest and Southeast is very good Fengshui.

Flowers or flowering plants are excellent energizers.  Growing pots of bulbs through seasons are good but perennial flowering plants are good. Dried flowers are a taboo but pictures or silk fabric flowers are acceptable although they are not as much the same as real flowers. Plants can be used to encounter or cover protruding corners in a home except in Bedrooms; Plants are also used to move stagnating energy, especially if the flooring is split level type. Keep upright tall plants in the lower levels of the split-level flooring to counter bad Fengshui.
