The passing of Manna Dey is end of an era. Talent like his, was a gift of god. The purity of his voice, without any trappings of modern digital technology, is an inimitable inspiration for young musicians of today. May his soul rest in peace.

This year has seen too many South Indian legends pass away. Now Manna Dey sir, who is a legend, has bid us farewell. With my initial years spent in New Delhi, my music was completely influenced by Hindi songs, both old and new. Manna Dey sir had stamped his authority on Bollywood for so many years that there are too many songs to quote! Ek Chatur Naar, his song from Padosan, with a funny take on South Indian style of singing in Hindi, was a hit. That was mainly because of his versatile rendition of it. In the end, he bids us goodbye, but his music will remain forever!

Manna Dey was one of my favourite singers. I met him once on an aircraft, five years ago. It was in a Chennai –Mumbai flight. He was so unassuming! Nobody recognised him. I indicated who he was to my colleagues and went up and said ‘hello’. For me, to hear him, was to hear a voice from within oneself. His voice was laced with honey, yet it was so manly. Every song he’s sung, stands out because of that inimitable voice. I can’t forget his songs — Zindagi, kaisi has paheli Haay, Kabhi to hansaaye, kabhi ye rulaaye. Another one of my favourites is Aye meri zohrajabeen.
VIJAY YESUDAS singer
I had the pleasure of meeting the great Manna Dey sir a long time ago in Kolkata. Much later, in Kerala, I had the wonderful honour of just standing on the same stage with him. The songs he has sung will linger for generations to come and one can only be grateful that he lived a wonderful life, filled with music and happiness till 94.
Manna Dey was a renowned playback singer but he was also one of the most beautiful music directors that India has given to the world. He made many great singers during the time that he composed music. He will surely be missed by all of us.
SUNDAR C BABU music director
Some people make music for ears, but Manna Dey’s music is for hearts and souls of all his fans. And it will live on for many more years to come. For the kind of musician that he was, his music will live forever.

There are no words to describe the loss of a national icon like Shri Manna Dey. He has been a true ambassador of Indian music. He will always be remembered through his music. May he rest in peace and may god give strength to all his family members to overcome the big loss.
Manna Dey was a saga of a spectacular blend of classicism in film music. His passing on has left us with an eternal loss
