DJ Eve Carey comes to Chennai

DJ Eve Carey, who will be playing at the 3rd anniversary celebrations at Chipstead, Taj Coramandel on Saturday, loves the energy in Indian crowd and music. It all started for her at a small recording studio in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Practising on a set of decks, Eve Carey, a self-taught DJ, embarked on the journey of playing a DJ. Today, after 16 years, her signature musical style — a mix of house, electro and driving beats — has made her an international sensation.

She is one of the three official Charlys Angelz appearing in tours in Ibiza and also has to her credit the rare accomplishment of being the first female DJ to play at Cream-Beirut in 2000. Having taught DJ courses in her hometown, her unending list of achievements as a DJ also includes a compilation CD. She is now working on her own production.

Carey, who has played alongside DJ greats like Frankie Knuckles, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Ray Roc, Tiesto and more, reckons her career milestone, “The greatest success so far has been the Ministry of Sound world tour for two years and the HMF festival in Brazil where I played alongside Tiesto and other such popular names,” she says.

Her USP, she says, is her unpredictable and eclectic mix of music — a fusion of varied styles. “I love to mix and blend different styles and keep people guessing about what’s coming next!” she adds.

It wasn’t an easy journey, according to the UK-based artiste, who says today women get opportunities more often, but it takes a lot more to be successful.

“When I first started DJing there were very few women DJs so it was different. Many think women get booked easily, but one has to work super hard to be technically sound and be crowdpuller,” she adds.

An ardent fan of Indian music, Carey also loves the fact that Indian audience is always open to new genres of music.

“Playing in India is fab, I love the energy here and EDM (Electronic Dance Music) is still new and upcoming, so it’s good being here at the start of it all and watching it grow. I Love the sounds and beats of traditional Indian music. There is some great passion and energy in Indian music. I think, in India, it’s all so new and fresh that one has the liberty to experiment,” she adds.

For all those who are wondering what’s in store for Saturday night — Carey, who is in the city for the first time, says none will be disappointed. “It’s my first trip here, and it’s always exciting travelling somewhere new. I am looking forward to seeing the Chennai crowd. I’ll play stuff people will know, but there will also be some new music. In a nutshell, a good blend of energetic house music,” she says.
