KK ready to experiment

Krishnakumar Kunnath, KK to everyone, has a few hundred songs to his credit. Most people would certainly remember the album Pal from 1999. KK clocked 3,500 jingles before he got his big break. And Bollywood happened with 'Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil' from the movie, 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' (1999). He has worked at a steady pace — recent box office hits like 'Ek Tha Tiger' and 'Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi' owe some of their numbers to him. We caught up with the singer.

Life in a metro

A Kishore Kumar fan, he admits that the songs from two decades ago scored, with melody. “It was a different time altogether. I could just go on a drive with my father or watch Doordarshan. Life was simple. Now there’s too much information, people keep interacting with each other, they are always on the move and even on television there are so many channels. Times have changed and so has the music,’’ admits the commerce graduate from Delhi University.

The right time

Referring to music trends, the 44-year-old says, “At one point of time, disco, rap, pop and bhangra were all famous. Now is the time for experimentation. It is like a big mixing pot, and all the genres of music come together.’’ That said he wouldn’t trade where he is now, for anything. ‘‘I love those three hours that I spend in the studio recording a song. It is like I live my life then,” concludes KK, who enjoys working with music directors such as A R Rahman and Ismail Darbar.
