Tanda, a nondescript and deceptively sleepy village lies miles away from the frenetic and frenzied Mumbai city. Tara was living peacefully in Tanda with her husband who brews booze for a living . But the calm and peace was not destined to prevail for long.
One fine morning her life turns topsy-turvy when her husband was put in jail after a police raid. From there starts the resolute journey of a village girl towards life, sustenance and of course, the ever elusive dignity.
Tara - The Journey of Love and Passion has no other message but women empowerment, says Kumar Raj, the director of the film, who was at Kochi with the heroine Rekha Rana. The film was inspired by the life of gang rape victim generally referred to as ‘Nirbhaya’ who fought for her life with much dignity. “This film upholds the rights of women. There aren’t many that grant her rights,” says the director. He adds that realising the gravity of the message the film conveys, Awnindra Pratap Pandey, a friend of Nirbhaya felt for the cause and helped the film crew to promote the film. “The film has garnered us rave reviews in the metros, Delhi and Mumbai,” he says.
Kumar Raj says that the movie has a crystal clear message. “Either you stand up for your rights or fear ostracizing from the community you live in. In a nutshell, snatch your rights.” After getting flailed in utter penury and battling against a flood of emotions, when one is left all alone in life, Tara decided to take the bull by the horns. She was ready to go to any extreme to survive,” explains the director about the storyline.
Kumar says that the story is purely based on the disturbing realities of Indian villages, the story of a self discovery and a burning question - Can you always choose freedom and self respect over social acceptance.
The film has fetched several accolades from all quarters and has been selected in competition section in Global film festival, Virginia Asian International Film festival, Dublin Social Justice Film Festival, Delhi International film festival, Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival, Jaipur International film festival 2013 and Nashik International film festival. The film was scripted by Kishan Pawarhas who won international award in South Africa for best story.
