Retirement on Laxman's mind

18th August 2012 09:53 AM

Veteran batsman VVS Laxaman announced his retirement from international cricket at a press conference here, Saturday afternoon.

Earlier ENS report:

One special last act before taking the final bow. It appears that VVS Laxman’s 16-year illustrious international career is coming to an end. The New Zealand series could well be his swan song, as he contemplates drawing the curtains on his reign as one of India’s topmost batsmen.

The decision comes after he was reportedly hurt by a former cricketer’s comment that he was blocking the way of youngsters into the team. To many, this might seem a hasty decision, Laxman still being capable of holding a place in the team, but much thought will go into the decision before Laxman takes the final call.

The wristy batsman is speaking to his family, cricket officials, coaches and close friends before coming to a decision. Following the retirement of Rahul Dravid earlier this year, Laxman calling it quits will leave a huge breach in the Indian middle order. India has depended on their solidity and the dependability for long.

The New Zealand series commences with the first Test, from August 23 to 27, in Laxman’s hometown Hyderabad. There will be no better way for him than this to bid adieu. One of the rare qualities of the stalwart is that he has never been involved in any kind of controversy either on or off the field. An unassuming and down to earth person, he does not believe in being dramatic and is a role model for upcoming cricketers. Laxman has always let his bat do all the talking.
