Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor both hit half centuries as New Zealand made a competitive 260 after being sent in to bat on the opening day of the second test against the West Indies at Sabina Park.
At stumps, the West Indies were 11-0 in reply.
Opener Guptill made 71, while Taylor contributed an enterprising 60 for New Zealand, which lost seven wickets after tea, posting a mediocre score after having been a promising 152-3 at the last interval.
Kemar Roach finished with the best bowling figures, taking 4-70.
Guptill and Taylor shared a third wicket stand of 103 that rescued the Kiwis after they slipped to 11-2 inside the first half hour, losing Brendon McCullum and B.J. Watling.
Fast bowler Tino Best broke the blossoming stand midway through the second session. Taylor tried to cut one that angled into him, cramping him for room, and edged through to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.
When Kane Williamson went after tea, caught at slip by Darren Sammy off Narsingh Deonarine, the tourists began to unravel, losing three wickets for just nine runs.
That included the departure of Guptill, who was run out by Best while attempting a quick single.
