The Gadag-born Sunil Bandacharya Joshi, the former India cricketer, announced his retirement from international and first-class cricket on Thursday.
An all-rounder who stood firm when state cricket was passing through a phase when the stalwarts like Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad, his teammates for long, had called it quits. Rahul Dravid was busy with India duties. It was left to the soft-spoken slow left arm spinner and a very useful left-hand batsman to hold forte, groom and inspire youngsters to carry on the task.
Joshi, who travelled 40 miles to Hubli every morning for practice, and then go back to Gadag for school, kept that dedication and commitment alive for more than two decades. Joshi played 15 Tests, mainly during the Sourav Ganguly era, and 69 ODIs for India between 1996 and 2001.
