Biju, who landed in the police net the other day for allegedly killing Liji, a native of Varkala, is a hardcore criminal, according to the police.
It was Biju’s ‘innocuous’ behaviour that had misled the investigating team and delayed the arrest. Biju, 35, husband of Liji’s cousin, was with the family members and locals during every step - be it the protest against the police or supporting Liji’s parents with financial aid.
“He even helped the police in the investigation process,” a member of the investigation team said.
Biju had also participated in a march taken out by the locals on the day of Liji’s death in protest against the alleged police lethargy in booking the culprit.
The investigation team, in the initial stage, was focusing on the locals who suddenly became absent from the area after Liji’s murder and Biju made full use of it.
Later, it was a statement given by Liji’s colleagues which made the cops suspicious about Biju. However, the real hurdle which stood in the way of the investigation team was the statement given by Liji’s parents, especially her mother. The cops have, by now, reached the conclusion that Liji’s mother might have concealed some information from them as Biju was a relative. Biju was a frequent visitor to Liji’s house and it seems that her parents were aware that he even proposed to her many times, something which they did not question out of fear.
Liji, 19, was a sales girl in a fancy shop at Varkala. Biju allegedly had hit her with his bike on June 15 as she resisted his attempt to molest her. Liji succumbed to her injuries at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital on June 25.
Biju was arrested on Monday and remanded to police custody for 14 days. According to the police, he is a history-sheeter who is an accused in several cases, including a murder case.
