“Though no system of medicine can cure diabetes, it can be controlled effectively,” said Dr Geetha Philip during the diabetes awareness week inaugurated on Monday at the Lourdes Hospital.

Actor Baburaj inaugurated the function. The motto of the three-day programme is ‘Secure the future, and let us prevent diabetes together’.

Diabetes screening, free blood tests, exhibition, counselling on food habits and exercise, and awareness classes will be held as a part of the observance week.  The first 50 participants are eligible for free cardiac check-ups and renal failure diagnosis.

The three-day programme will include discussions on diabetes and cardiac problems. Discussions on diabetes in young women will be held on Tuesday. On Wednesday  diabetes and kidney related problems would be discussed.

Fr Sabu Nedunilath, Dr Paul Puthooran, Dr Abraham P George and Dr Johnson Abraham among others spoke on ways to control diabetes. Diabetes week observance addresses the issues being faced by the global diabetes community. Diet and medication, exercise and proper awareness are the remedies, they said.
