As the monsoon season approaches, Chennai Corporation has decided to re-lay 450 damaged roads in the city as soon as possible.
Sources say that Mayor Saidai Duraisamy has directed the corporation to begin work on the damaged roads imemdiately, so that it can be finished before the monsoon hits. Top officials say that it could begin as early as September 1.
A 108-crore proposal for re-laying 1,200 roads, a total length of 248.56 km, with plastic-bitumen mix was approved by the council, and tenders were floated on August 10. Tenders were received for only 40 of the 44 packages proposed, for 959 roads. Tenders for all three packages for zone-3 (Madhavaram) and one package for zone-1 (Thiruvottiyur) will be re-opened on 24 August, corporation officials said.
According to an official press release, the Alandur zone will be the largest beneficiary of this scheme with 13.18 crore set aside for this project, while zone-3 needs the most number of roads (211) to be re-laid.
“Work on the damaged roads is the Corporation’s top priority. The remaining roads can be re-laid even after the monsoon,” said a Corporation official.
