The Madras High Court has granted time till August 22 for the State government to frame draft guidelines for school buses.
Originally, while passing interim orders on a suo-motu writ petition, the first bench consisting of Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam, on July 27, had directed the governement through Advocate-General A Navaneethakrishnan to frame the draft rules to regulate the use of vehicles carrying children to chools.
When the matter came up on Friday, the AG sought for some more time to enable the government to frame the rules. The bench said that it might not be difficult for the government to immediately frame the rules incorporating effective measures to be taken by the transport operators in view of the guidelines already issued by the Supreme Court and a circular issued by the Transport Department in August 2006.
The bench, however, granted time till August 22, with the hope that the AG would produce the draft guidelines by then.
Earlier, advocate R Y George Williams brought to the court’s notice that after the suo-motu petition was taken up, more than five fatal accidents involving school children had taken place.
