Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan at Global Hospitals on Friday | EPS
Almost a working week after Vilasrao Deshmukh was admitted in a critical state to the Global Health City, doctors on Friday briefly took him off ventilator as his condition improved slightly.
According to sources, doctors in the multi-speciality hospital took the former Maharashtra CM off life support as his condition had “taken a few steps in the right direction”. They allowed him to breathe freely for short spells through the day, but put him back on the device “to ensure he didn’t strain himself unduly”, the sources added.
Better news for Congress supporters from Maharashtra was that the doctors were believed to have shifted him to a ‘solitary observation’ ward from the ICU, which indicated that his condition had indeed stabilised.
The stream of visitors increased on Friday with DMK top brass T R Baalu and M K Alagiri dropping by to enquire about his health with the family. Alagiri told newsmen that his health was “improving sufficiently well”.
In the afternoon Ashok Chavan, dropped by to visit his colleague. Apparently, Chavan showed a spirit of “bonhomie and camaraderie” when he met Deshmukh’s family and the ailing man himself. Though he refused to comment on either the land scam or the alleged straining of relations between him and Deshmukh, he merely said that “Deshmukh’s health is stable now”.
