Fury, frustration at Chennai Metro site

09th August 2012 10:01 AM

Fear, anger and a lack of information was perceptible as over a 100 workers gathered around the Metro rail construction site at Pachaiyappa’s College on Wednesday night, moments after 25-tonne steel rods came crashing down, killing a worker and injuring six others.

“Please let us in. We want to know the fate of our colleagues,” pleaded a worker as L&T officials denied them entry.

Angered by what they termed as indifference, a worker banged on the metal door, demanding that he be let in.

Immediately, a cop pounced on the worker, slapped him and a few other workers, before asking them to leave. “Don’t stand here. Clear out immediately,” he said, as the workers took cover inside the make-shift barracks near the site. “The steel rods fell on them when the work was going on. More than 100 were inside,” another worker said, while adding that the supervisor has asked them not to speak to anybody. Initially, it seemed as if the whole issue was being hushed up. It was only the workers who were in know of things.

Meanwhile, the traffic flowed as usual as passers-by did not seem to have any inkling that a major accident had occurred.

The on-site project managers were taken in by police for questioning. When asked, a metro rail spokesman said he has no information. “You ask L&T officials,” he retorted.  At first, a lone ambulance and a fire engine entered the site, soon to be followed by five more ambulances.

CM Announces Relief

Expressing grief over the death of Sindhu, a worker engaged at the site, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday night announced a solatium of `1 lakh to the kin of the deceased.  She also announced `25,000 as financial aid to six others who were injured. The CM wished all the injured a speedy recovery.

Fatal accident had been more common in infrastructure projects carried allover India in recent years. Developed countries had set their KPI (Singapore -1.1 fatalities / million mans worked) to bring down their fatality rates by enforcing safety standards with hiegher penalties for occupier of the project to takecare human lifes. Its a big question mark that the contractor had extablished and enhanced safety measures as stated below when heavy lifting to be carried? 1. Has the risk assessment developed and communicated for the specific activities 2. Permit to work system in place? 3. Crane operator qualified and experienced in operating the crane? 4. Lifting crew in place (Lifting supervisor/Rigger/ Signalman/ Qualifeid crane operator)? 5. Is the crane condition good to use? 6. Lifting plan developed ( lifting load calculated) 7. Crane access and stablity of the ground condition had been examined and clearence given by the specific engineer. Govt to review safety regulations immediately

In Singapore 2 workers died recently in a metro rail work site accident.

Let us not forget about "Nicoll Highway" before accusing other sites.

L&T is the favourite of the present C.M as the past works in her period was done by this company. so L&T will use all its good offices to hide the facts and the wrong doings of the management to save their name and brand...from this accident. But truth is that the safety managers have not done their job and innocent lives have been lost.. The worst is yet to come... so beware and do not compromise on safety...

accidents do happen in all construction sites whatever precautions drill carried out by companies.Delhi metro faced similar problems. When an accident happens to be a major one resulting in loss of lives then it becomes a major issue with police and govt walking in.Audit of sites could reveal whether extended hours of work by section from northern India caused some fatique.I am not for blaming L & T alone as works get sub-contracted.
