A new born baby girl, left abandoned in a garbage dump, was rescued at Kovilambakkam on Saturday. Latha, a resident of Pallikaranai was walking near her house on Saturday morning when she noticed a baby girl in a garbage dump surrounded by stray dogs, police said. She shooed away the dogs and took the baby.

Police sources said Latha had wanted to adopt the baby. But the officials of a welfare home that arrived to take the baby refused and said she needed to go through the procedures for adoption.
