Taking a stand: Five inmates from the Chengalpattu special camp|Express
Six Sri Lankan refugees living in the Chengalpattu Special Ca-mp on Friday launched a hunger str-ike, demanding that they be released immediately.
In all, the camp has 32 inmates, 29 of whom are from Lanka and three from Nigeria.
This is the third such protest by the refugees this year. The previous one was on April 16 when they launched a fast-unto-death strike, but withdrew it on April 29 after officials promised to take measures to release at least 15 inmates by June 5. However, for various reasons, the promise was not kept.
A Lankan refugee told Express that the officials were yet to discuss the issue with them. “This time we will not settle for anything less than freedom,” he said.
Five inmates — R Sivakumar, V Yokantahtan, R Viknesvaran, M Kalakaran and S Thausan — claimed that they had been acquitted by courts in various cases. Yet, they had not been granted freedom.
The six inmates who launched their fast-unto-death stir on Friday are Parabaran, Senthooran, Narmadan, Jegandas, Satheeshkumar and Selvaraj. Sources said the entire camp would join the protest in a phased manner.
