Famed vocalist Nithyasree’s husband takes the fatal leap

21st December 2012 08:35 AM

Classical singer Nithyasree’s husband Mahadevan (45) committed suicide on Thursday afternoon by jumping into the Adyar River after parking his car on the Kotturpuram bridge. Police officers attributed it to depression.

According to police, around 12.15 pm, Mahadevan sat behind the wheel of his luxury sedan and started driving with his driver Suresh alongside. Midway through the bridge, he pulled over and parked the car. After both alighted, Mahadevan locked the car, put the key in his pocket, walked across the sidewalk to the parapet wall and jumped into the Adyar River around 12.30 pm, police said. It all happened in a flash and the driver couldn’t respond.

While passersby alerted police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel at Kotturpuram, driver Suresh called up Nithyasree, who rushed to the spot. As she was sobbing inconsolably, the police advised her to go back. She then left for her home at Vellaiyan Street in Kotturpuram.

Around 1.30 pm, Mahadevan’s body was fished out of the river and taken to a private hospital where doctors declared him ‘brought dead’. Kotturpuram Police Inspector N Elangovan told Express that Mahadevan was being treated for his depression at a multi-specialty hospital for the past five years.

“Mahadevan’s mental condition worsened after his mother Shanthi passed away in April. When he stopped the car in the middle of the bridge, his driver thought Mahadevan wanted to take a leak, but he jumped into the river,” he said. Nithyasree is the grand-daughter of legendary Carnatic vocalist D K Pattammal. Mahadevan was an engineer with a private firm. They have two daughters — Thejasree (8) and Thanujasree (6).

This is very unfortunate. May God give them courage to overcome this loss. This is not a forum or time to spread hatred, Truth - please be sensible.

"his driver thought Mahadevan wanted to take a leak"??? What sort of a language is this in a nationalised newspaper. Mr Goenka must be turning in his grave. Your Reporter should have been sensitive in dealing with the copy. He sounds illogical. Has he ever visited Kotturpuram bridge? Why should someone whose house is close by even think of reliving himself at the Kotturpuram bridge? In fact, no body would do the act at Kottupuram bridge because of the constant traffic. Your Reporter needs to be taught basic English. Please send him to an English institute.

This is a sad tragedy no doubt. Mahadevan was in depression and was being treated. Being in this condition, why was he allowed to drive bike or a car? Mahadevan had two daughters and he didnt bother about them. He made the driver sit in back seat and he took U-turn around Kotturpuram bridge. He took the car keys with him before he jumped. This shows Mahadevan was cognizant of his actions and didnt care about his kids and was a coward to take his life. It was all about a domestic dispute and who controls whom. So let us not be too caring for this Mahadevan. Mr. Truth seems outspoken and has written what is happening. Why go after him? There are so many kids dying every day in India drinking dirty water and with no food. Does the media ever bother giving attention about those poor kids? Instead Mahadevan a coward gets attention, because he is a rich guy. Such is life, fair to some and unfair to so many, because of they are rich or poor. Amazing isnt it.

does anyone know what is nitasree's husband profession.? just to know his mentality and status in family.

It is cruel play of destiny on Nityashree .. It is only a slip in her family life but her music is eternal and divine. Who knows the power of divinity ..we believe every action on earth has got a meaning .It is time we pray for her bravery to come out of the crisis . SHE WILL .
