Classical singer Nithyasree’s husband Mahadevan (45) committed suicide on Thursday afternoon by jumping into the Adyar River after parking his car on the Kotturpuram bridge. Police officers attributed it to depression.
According to police, around 12.15 pm, Mahadevan sat behind the wheel of his luxury sedan and started driving with his driver Suresh alongside. Midway through the bridge, he pulled over and parked the car. After both alighted, Mahadevan locked the car, put the key in his pocket, walked across the sidewalk to the parapet wall and jumped into the Adyar River around 12.30 pm, police said. It all happened in a flash and the driver couldn’t respond.
While passersby alerted police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel at Kotturpuram, driver Suresh called up Nithyasree, who rushed to the spot. As she was sobbing inconsolably, the police advised her to go back. She then left for her home at Vellaiyan Street in Kotturpuram.
Around 1.30 pm, Mahadevan’s body was fished out of the river and taken to a private hospital where doctors declared him ‘brought dead’. Kotturpuram Police Inspector N Elangovan told Express that Mahadevan was being treated for his depression at a multi-specialty hospital for the past five years.
“Mahadevan’s mental condition worsened after his mother Shanthi passed away in April. When he stopped the car in the middle of the bridge, his driver thought Mahadevan wanted to take a leak, but he jumped into the river,” he said. Nithyasree is the grand-daughter of legendary Carnatic vocalist D K Pattammal. Mahadevan was an engineer with a private firm. They have two daughters — Thejasree (8) and Thanujasree (6).

It is a great tragedy o a personal level, espacially for Nithyashree and her daughters. Let us not belittle that by intemperate statements. I must add that fame and fortune cause sometimes the feelings of being ignored and neglected on one of the partners, leading to inferiority complex, friction and depression. May God bring peace to the Mahadevan family.

If it was other way around , the husband and his family members would have been booked under dowry act , domestic violence etc. RIP Mahadevan. The FIR would been filed that the torture was going on from the first day of marriage and the proof would been the medical record of taking treatment for depression for the past 5 years.

You are right and it should be like that because in 99% cases traditionally women have been the victims. Everybody knows that. But it is true that, nowadays, in many cases where the woman has a strong personality and greater resources, the tables could be turned. That is the nature of life -the strong, whoever it may be, tends to dominate and often, in the case of animals, even eliminate, the weak.

Unfortunate but In this case the relatives of husband are spared.

Still, it is not so black and white. Again, I feel that in 99% of cases, women victims of violence, who even dare to report their cases, have been traditionally bullied, insulted, humiliated, degraded, outcast and emotionally if not physically murdered, not only by the justice and police systems, not only by the surrounding society, but even by her own family, often because the family itself gets humiliated and overwhelmed by all the pressure. So it is a great shame if powerful women subvert the system and act likewise because it further prejudices the whole system and sets back even the tiny progress that has been painfully made over the millennia in favour of women victims of oppression. This is of course only a general comment without prejudice to any party.

Incidents like this comes to show to the society that it is ignorance to put people, whatever be their achievements in life, on too high a pedestal. A mature society would not overlook or ignore the limitations and flaws of the so called 'stars' but learn to be balanced in its appreciation and admiration for them. Many greatly successful people have been big failures in their personal lives.
