After receiving flak for the recent garbage menace, the civic body is now looking for an efficient way to handle garbage aiming to convert the city’s garbage into bio-fuel.
In a meeting here at the BBMP on Monday, companies demonstrated technologies to convert garbage into biogas before BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel, Executive Chairman, Karnataka state Biofuel Development Board, Dr Radhakrishna S Aithal, and Secretary DPAR, Dr Shalini Rajneesh.
Synod Bioscience Pvt Ltd came up with a decentralised model where individual households can set up bio-gas production and utilisation unit near their homes.
“In our model, feed material like leftover food, vegetable wastes non-edible oil and animal excreta are introduced into the main digester of the plant. The gas coming out of the plant can be used in the kitchen with the help of bio-gas stove while the slurry coming out can be used as fertilizers,” said Zeeshan M P of the Synod.
Mailhem Engineers, came up with a solution to generate biogas using high-rate biomethanation technique with decentralised plants. “The bio-degradable waste first goes through a shredding process and then it is processed through a bio-gas digester which then comes out as usable gas,” said K C Achappa, general manager, Mailhem Engineers Pvt Ltd.
A representative from Sunrays Compost said, “In our technology we shred wet garbage. The plastic covers are separated manually. The shredded garbage goes to farmers.”
Solutions were also given by Noble Exchange Environment Solutions Pvt Ltd. There were discussions to hand over the monitoring job to Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board once the BBMP decides on which technology is to be used.
