Tresspass Salon in Garuda Mall, witnessed a defaming incident when a couple working in the IT sector wrongly accused its staffers of stealing their jewellery.
What started as a dramatic sight for all visitors to the mall on Friday afternoon, ended after five hours later outside the Ashoknagar Police Station, with recovery of the jewellery from the purse of the ‘self-proclaimed’ victims themselves. However, the icky factor about this crime tale is that the jewellery was found hidden in a sanitary pad, inside the wife’s purse.
It was around 1 pm when Amit Gupta, a techie from Accenture, walked into the Trespass salon to get a 60 per cent discount on a coupon.
The tale that started with a fake fight between the couple ended with yet another twist. After two hours, while the couple were about to pay the bill, the wife suddenly exclaimed that her expensive jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh was missing. The staffers looked around the place and the woman checked her purse too, but did not find.
When Gupta threatened to create a scene at the mall, if the salon staffers refused to return the ‘stolen’ jewels, the owner Sunita Shankar tried to convince him to keep his cool over the phone. He instead claimed that he would not spare anyone if his wife’s jewels were not returned. “I was on Kanakapura Road when my manager called to inform me about the scene. I tried to tell him that our staffers are very honest and they never do something like this. But he agitatedly told me that the Joint Commissioner was his brother-in-law and that he was about to call the police,” said Sunita Shankar, owner of the salon.
Taking stock of the chaos, the Garuda Mall security staff immediately rushed to the salon and tried to reason with the couple. The police from the Ashoknagar Police Station also reached the mall. “The police told us to close the salon and took around 10 of my staffers for interrogation,” she explained.
“The couple had filed a theft complaint. In the initial stages of enquiry, we generally do not suspect the victims. Three rings and a pair of earrings were found wrapped in a sanitary pad in her purse. Later on Saturday, Amit Gupta sent us a written apology letter,” said Jagadish, Police Inspector, Ashoknagar Police Station.
In his apology letter, Amit Gupta wrote, “I apologise for my earlier complaint regarding missing jewellery from my wife’s purse as we subsequently found it in our own bag.”
The salon owner now plans to send a legal notice to the couple for defaming them and wrongly accusing their staff.
