Sensex flat with positive bias; Metal falls over 1%

Indian equities continues to trade flat with positive bias in noon session on Monday. At 12.14 pm, the Sensex was trading up 23.21 points or 0.13% at 17,772.86 with 18 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 8.25 points or 0.15% at 5,366.95 with 31 components gaining.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 31.28 points or 0.18% at 17,780.93, while the broad based NSE Nifty began flat with a gain of 3.20 points or 0.06%, at 5,361.90.
Sensex Movers
Housing Development Finance Corporation
contributed rise of 16.19 points in the Sensex. It was followed by
I T C (8.05 points), Bharti Airtel (7.79 points), Sun
Pharmaceutical Industries (6.95 points) and Tata Steel (6.51
points).
However, I C I C I Bank contributed fall of 9.99 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Hindustan Unilever (7.55 points), Tata Consultancy Services (7.37 points), State Bank Of India (6.74 points) and Reliance Industries (6.03 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Steel (2.19%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (2.08%), Bharti Airtel (1.98%), Hindalco Industries (1.82%), Coal India (1.61%), and Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.22%).
On the other hand, Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.73%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.48%), State Bank Of India (1.13%), Hindustan Unilever (1.12%), I C I C I Bank (0.79%), and Tata Consultancy Services (0.77%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.50% and 0.66% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Aban Offshore (1.85%), CORE Education and Technologies (0.65%), Alstom India (0.47%), Delta Corp (0.25%) and Amtek India (0.1%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (4.65%), Aarti Industries (1.65%), Trident (0.58%), Styrolution ABS (India) (0.13%) and Aanjaneya Lifecare (0.06%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Metal index was at 9,949.58, up by 112.43 points or by 1.14%. The major gainers were NMDC (2.34%), Hindalco Industries (1.82%), Coal India (1.61%), JSW Steel (1.12%) and Hindustan Zinc (0.69%).
The Bankex index was at 11,607.94, down by 38.51 points or by 0.33%. The major losers were I C I C I Bank (0.79%), Bank Of India (0.5%), Federal Bank (0.43%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (0.22%) and Indusind Bank (0.2%).The IT index was at 5,967.04, down by 16.14 points or by 0.27%. The major losers were Tata Consultancy Services (0.77%), Wipro (0.68%), Hexaware Technologies (0.15%) and Infosys (0.12%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was positive with 1,410 advances against 1,093 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
E I H topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 460.02 million. It was followed by United Spirits (Rs. 301.15 million), State Bank Of India (Rs. 277.50 million) and Tata Steel (Rs. 183.04 million).
The volume chart was led by E I H with trades of over 5.94 million shares. It was followed by Cals Refineries (3.44 million), Spicejet (2.01 million) and Kingfisher Airlines (1.92 million).
