Sensex gains 51 points; Mid and Smallcap outperform

Indian markets continued to rise for the third day on Saturday led by healthcare, metal and consumer durables stocks.
At 12.15 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 50.74 points or 0.29% at 17,734.47 with 23 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 11.95 points or 0.22% at 5,354.05 with 34 components gaining.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a rise of 17.34 points or 0.10% at 17,701.07, while the broad based NSE Nifty began flat with a gain of 1.55 points or 0.03%, at 5,343.65.
Sensex Movers
Reliance Industries contributed rise of 7.83 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Motors (3.72 points), ICICI Bank (3.42 points), Hindustan Unilever (3.12 points) and Sterlite Industries (India) (3.09 points).
However, Bharat Heavy Electricals contributed fall of 2.95 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Bharti Airtel (1.76 points), Tata Consultancy Services (1.3 points), NTPC (1.07 points) and Jaiprakash Associates (0.56 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Cipla (2.27%), Sterlite Industries (India) (1.76%), Dr Reddy"s Laboratories (1.41%), Hindalco Industries (1.33%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.11%), and Wipro (0.81%).
On the other hand, Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.34%), Bharti Airtel (0.45%), Coal India (0.36%), NTPC (0.32%), GAIL (India) (0.19%), and Bajaj Auto (0.18%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.43% and 0.47% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Alok Industries (1.37%), Alstom India (1.12%), Amtek Auto (0.91%), Aban Offshore (0.31%) and Amara Raja Batteries (0.19%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Aarti Industries (1.81%), Aanjaneya Lifecare (0.99%), Trident (0.34%), Styrolution ABS (India) (0.27%) and A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (0.08%).
Sectors in Limelight
The HC index was at 7,629.67, up by 79.31 points or by 1.05%. The major gainers were Aurobindo Pharma (3%), Cipla (2.27%), Cadila Healthcare (0.99%), Biocon (0.87%) and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (0.63%).
The Metal index was at 9,821.40, up by 78.86 points or by 0.81%. The major gainers were Hindustan Zinc (1.59%), Hindalco Industries (1.33%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.11%), JSW Steel (0.69%) and Bhushan Steel (0.65%).
The Consumer Durables index was at 6,393.60, up by 43.04 points or by 0.68%. The major gainers were Gitanjali Gems (2.14%), Whirlpool Of India (1.36%), Rajesh Exports (0.79%), Bajaj Electricals (0.47%) and Blue Star (0.23%).
On the other hand, the Power index was at 1,878.84, down by 4.71 points or by 0.25%. The major losers were Adani Power (2.62%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.34%), NTPC (0.32%), G M R Infrastructure (0.26%) and Lanco Infratech (0.09%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was positive with 1,227 advances against 685 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
Vadilal Industries topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 117.39 million. It was followed by M M T C (Rs. 115.62 million), Amar Remedies (Rs. 63.24 million) and Strides Arcolab (Rs. 58.48 million).
The volume chart was led by Avance Technologies with trades of over 1.65 million shares. It was followed by Amar Remedies (1.38 million), Suryachakra Power Corporation (0.64 million) and Deccan Chronicle Holdings (0.55 million).
