Sensex trades up 42 points; Metal, Auto & Realty rise

Indian equities continued to rally for the second day on Wednesday. At 10.06 a.m, the Sensex was trading up 41.85 points or 0.24% at 17,467.56 with 22 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 14.10 points or 0.27% at 5,302.05 with 33 components gaining.

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 47.55 points or 0.27% at 17,473.26, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a rise of 22.45 points or 0.42%, at 5,310.40.

Sensex Movers

State Bank Of India contributed rise of 7.25 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Motors (6.4 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (5.93 points), H D F C Bank (5.78 points) and I C I C I Bank (5.72 points).

However, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation contributed fall of 12.21 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Hindustan Unilever (5.79 points), Reliance Industries (5.13 points), Tata Consultancy Services (4.43 points) and Wipro (3.22 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Sterlite Industries (India) (2.28%), Maruti Suzuki India (2.11%), Jindal Steel & Power (2.01%), Tata Steel (1.56%), Tata Power Company (1.30%), and Tata Motors (1.18%).

On the other hand, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.69%), Wipro (1.11%), Hindustan Unilever (0.99%), Tata Consultancy Services (0.50%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.36%), and Reliance Industries (0.33%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.67% and 0.45% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Aban Offshore (3.03%), Alstom Projects India (1.13%), A I A Engineering (1.06%), CORE Education and Technologies (0.91%) and Alok Industries (0.28%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Advanta India (3.67%), Reliance MediaWorks (1.75%), Adhunik Metaliks (1.29%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (1.11%) and Trident (0.7%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Metal index was at 11,094.63, up by 160.32 points or by 1.47%. The major gainers were Hindustan Zinc (2.25%), Jindal Steel & Power (2.01%), Hindalco Industries (1.01%), Bhushan Steel (0.39%) and Coal India (0.11%).

The Auto index was at 9,521.01, up by 94.58 points or by 1.00%. The major gainers were Ashok Leyland (3.07%), Bharat Forge (1.5%), Exide Industries (0.94%), Hero Motocorp (0.83%) and Bajaj Auto (0.36%).

The Realty index was at 1,754.62, up by 14.48 points or by 0.83%. The major gainers were Anant Raj Industries (2.33%), Godrej Properties (1.02%), Indiabulls Real Estate (0.95%), D L F (0.37%) and D B Realty (0.06%).

On the other hand, the Oil & Gas index was at 8,111.11, down by 35.69 points or by 0.44%. The major losers were Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.69%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (1.24%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (0.82%), Indian Oil Corporation (0.53%) and Reliance Industries (0.33%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,268 advances against 625 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

State Bank Of India topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 218.22 million. It was followed by Infrastructure Development Finance Company (Rs. 111.29 million), Reliance Capital (Rs. 83.81 million) and Housing Development and Infrastructure (Rs. 81.22 million).

The volume chart was led by 3i Infotech with trades of over 2.73 million shares. It was followed by Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision (1.62 million), Onmobile Global (1.51 million) and Unitech (1.44 million).
