Sensex down 119 points; Hindalco, Tata Steel, HDFC fall

Indian equities continue to tradelower due toweak global cues. Metal, capital goods and banking stocks declined.
At 1.53 p.m., the Sensex was trading down 118.86 points or 0.70% at 16,913.70 with 22 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 29.70 points or 0.58% at 5,135.30 with 38 components falling.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a decline of 149.82 points or 0.88% at 16,882.74, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 63.25 points or 1.22%, at 5,101.75.
Sensex Movers
Reliance Industries contributed fall of 20.82 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Housing Development Finance Corporation (16.99 points), I T C (15.6 points), I C I C I Bank (15.6 points) and Larsen & Toubro (11.47 points).
However, Tata Consultancy Services contributed rise of 7.32 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (7.05 points), Maruti Suzuki India (3 points), Hero Motocorp (1.91 points) and Mahindra & Mahindra (1.06 points).
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Maruti Suzuki India (1.58%), Cipla (1.29%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.05%), Tata Consultancy Services (0.83%), Hero Motocorp (0.81%), and Bajaj Auto (0.53%).
On the other hand, Hindalco Industries (3.71%), Tata Steel (2.86%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.51%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.42%), I C I C I Bank (1.36%), and Reliance Industries (1.35%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts declining-0.34% and -0.22% respectively.The major losers in the BSE Midcap were CORE Education and Technologies (2.01%), Allcargo Logistics (1.92%), Alstom Projects India (1.47%), Aban Offshore (0.65%) and A I A Engineering (0.48%).The major losers in the BSE Smallcap were A B G Infralogistics (4.34%), Action Construction Equipment (3.79%), Aanjaneya Lifecare (3.59%), Adhunik Metaliks (1.79%) and Aarti Industries (1.16%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Metal index was at 10,309.01, down by 191.73 points or by 1.83%. The major losers were Hindalco Industries (3.71%), Hindustan Zinc (1.54%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.42%), Coal India (0.73%) and Bhushan Steel (0.63%).
The Capital Goods index was at 9,699.70, down by 99.84 points or by 1.02%. The major losers were Crompton Greaves (1.86%), Alstom Projects India (1.47%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.01%), BEML (0.84%) and A I A Engineering (0.48%).
The Bankex index was at 11,465.03, down by 97.72 points or by 0.85%. The major losers were Canara Bank(1.43%), I C I C I Bank (1.36%), H D F C Bank (0.5%), Federal Bank (0.14%) and Bank Of Baroda (0.05%).
On the other hand, the Auto index was at 9,345.02, up by 15.90 points or by 0.17%. The major gainers were Maruti Suzuki India (1.58%), Hero Motocorp (0.81%), Cummins India (0.58%), Bajaj Auto (0.53%) and Mahindra & Mahindra (0.28%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was negative with 1,121 advances against 1,490 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
State Bank Of India topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,196.23 million. It was followed by Tata Motors (Rs. 500.18 million), Housing Development and Infrastructure (Rs. 476.27 million) and Larsen & Toubro (Rs. 354.60 million).
The volume chart was led by Housing Development and Infrastructure with trades of over 6.06 million shares. It was followed by Manappuram Finance (4.82 million), Cals Refineries (4.45 million) and Lanco Infratech (4.32 million).
