Sensex edges lower; Metal down over 1%

Indian equities continued to trade on a flat note amid volatility on Thursday. BSE Midcap and Smallcap index outperformed the benchmark indices. IT and capital goods traded higher while metal and oil & gas declined.
At 11.14 a.m., the Sensex was trading down 20.68 points or 0.11% at 19,231.93 with 20 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 7.80 points or 0.13% at 5,810.80 with 34 components falling.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a decline of 30.56 points or 0.16% at 19,222.05, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 17.30 points or 0.30%, at 5,801.30.
Sensex Movers
Reliance Industries contributed fall of 14.04 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Motors (10.68 points), Hindustan Unilever (7.5 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (7.39 points) and I T C (7.01 points).
However, Infosys contributed rise of 20.72 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (15.02 points), Larsen & Toubro (10.25 points), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (7.67 points) and Wipro (6.74 points).
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Hero Motocorp (2.86%), Wipro (2.18%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.94%), Tata Consultancy Services (1.43%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.38%), and Infosys (1.22%).
On the other hand, Jindal Steel & Power (2.66%), Hindalco Industries (1.72%), Tata Motors (1.63%), Hindustan Unilever (1.28%), Sterlite Industries (India) (1.26%), and Tata Steel (1.14%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.20% and 0.41% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Anant Raj (6.91%), Hexaware Technologies (3.84%), Alstom India (1.22%), Amara Raja Batteries (0.67%) and Amtek India (0.15%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (4.12%), Reliance MediaWorks (1.43%), Advanta India (1.32%), Aegis Logistics (0.67%) and Trident (0.12%).
Sectors in Limelight
The IT index was at 7,042.27, up by 97.68 points or by 1.41%. The major gainers were Hexaware Technologies (3.84%), Tech Mahindra (2.09%), Oracle Financial Services Software (2.04%), H C L Technologies (1.48%) and Infosys (1.22%).
The TECk index was at 4,027.21, up by 43.93 points or by 1.10%. The major gainers were Deccan Chronicle Holdings (3.49%), Oracle Financial Services Software (2.04%), Dish TV India (1.79%), Reliance MediaWorks (1.43%) and D B Corp (1.27%).
The Capital Goods index was at 9,620.32, up by 94.91 points or by 1.00%. The major gainers were Crompton Greaves (1.52%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.38%), Alstom India (1.22%), Havell'S India (1.19%) and A B B (0.94%).
On the other hand, the Metal index was at 9,226.27, down by 102.81 points or by 1.1%. The major losers were Jindal Steel & Power (2.66%), Hindalco Industries (1.72%), Coal India (0.58%), Hindustan Zinc (0.25%) and Bhushan Steel (0.2%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was positive with 1,217 advances against 1,052 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
Adani Power topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 252.65 million. It was followed by D L F (Rs. 249.16 million), Larsen & Toubro (Rs. 161.45 million) and M M T C (Rs. 157.56 million).
The volume chart was led by Adani Power with trades of over 5.21 million shares. It was followed by Housing Development and Infrastructure (1.87 million), NHPC (1.85 million) and Unitech (1.38 million).
