Sensex, Nifty down nearly 1%

Indian equitiesfell further in thepost noon trade today led by losses seen in auto, oil & gas and metal stocks. Rail stocks werehit the mostafter railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansalstartedhis speech.Railways stocks Kernex Microsystems fell 6.32% followed by Titagarh Wagons (5.69%), Stone India (6.74%) and BEML (1.53%).At 12.57 p.m., the Sensex was trading down 174.90 points or 0.90% at 19,156.79 with 23 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 53.05 points or 0.91% at 5,801.70 with 42 components falling.

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a decline of 41.03 points or 0.21% at 19,290.66, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 16.45 points or 0.28%, at 5,838.30.

Sensex Movers

I C I C I Bank contributed fall of 38.69 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Reliance Industries (35.45 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (35.02 points), Tata Motors (23.93 points) and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (18.42 points).

However, I T C contributed rise of 17.39 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Infosys (13.87 points), Bharti Airtel (13.23 points), Tata Consultancy Services (8.53 points) and Hindustan Unilever (6.1 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Bharti Airtel (2.75%), Hindustan Unilever (1.06%), I T C (0.92%), Infosys (0.86%), Tata Consultancy Services (0.86%), and NTPC (0.70%).

On the other hand, Tata Motors (3.70%), Hindalco Industries (2.72%), I C I C I Bank (2.63%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (2.44%), Bajaj Auto (2.30%), and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (2.28%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps underperformed their larger counterparts declining -1.46% and -1.80% respectively.The major losers in the BSE Midcap were A I A Engineering (3.02%), Aban Offshore (2.96%), Allcargo Logistics (1.95%), Alstom India (1.61%) and Allahabad Bank (1%).The major losers in the BSE Smallcap were Aanjaneya Lifecare (20%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (2.45%), Aarti Industries (1.94%), Trident (1.19%) and Styrolution ABS (India) (0.81%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Auto index was at 10,552.22, down by 232.65 points or by 2.16%. The major losers were Ashok Leyland (2.36%), Bajaj Auto (2.3%), Bharat Forge (1.83%), Mahindra & Mahindra (1.58%) and Hero Motocorp (1.13%).

The Oil & Gas index was at 8,788.03, down by 176.76 points or by 1.97%. The major losers were Indian Oil Corporation (2.54%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (2.21%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (2.16%), G A I L (India) (1.43%) and Cairn India (0.21%).

On the other hand, the TECk index was at 3,897.90, up by 26.00 points or by 0.67%. The major gainers were Idea Cellular (3.47%), Bharti Airtel (2.75%), Infosys (0.86%), Tata Consultancy Services (0.86%) and Oracle Financial Services Software (0.6%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 677 advances against 1,918 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Zee Entertainment Enterprises topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 493.47 million. It was followed by Jet Airways (India) (Rs. 436.94 million), State Bank Of India (Rs. 342.33 million) and Infosys (Rs. 274.04 million).

The volume chart was led by Suzlon Energy with trades of over 2.91 million shares. It was followed by TV18 Broadcast (2.50 million), Zee Entertainment Enterprises (2.27 million) and Housing Development and Infrastructure (2.25 million).
