Markets volatile; Tata Steel gains over 2%

Indian markets are still trading on a flat note with positive bias towards the close. Realty, capital goods and power stocks rallied. At 02.58 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 42.76 points or 0.22% at 19,510.91 with 16 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 11.70 points or 0.20% at 5,899.10 with 29 components gaining.

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 28.10 points or 0.14% at 19,496.25, while the broad based NSE Nifty began flat with a gain of 1.25 points or 0.02%, at 5,888.65.

Sensex Movers

Housing Development Finance Corporation contributed rise of 22.86 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Larsen & Toubro (13.71 points), Hindustan Unilever (11.33 points), Reliance Industries (8.82 points) and State Bank Of India (8.24 points).

However, Tata Consultancy Services contributed fall of 10.31 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (8.45 points), Infosys (7.03 points), I T C (3.25 points) and Bharti Airtel (3.13 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Steel (2.23%), Hindustan Unilever (1.93%), Sterlite Industries (India) (1.66%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.55%), Larsen & Toubro (1.45%), and Hindalco Industries (1.41%).

On the other hand, Coal India (1.90%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.79%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.04%), Tata Consultancy Services (1.03%), Bharti Airtel (0.63%), and Mahindra & Mahindra (0.49%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.40% and 0.68% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Allcargo Logistics (1.81%), A I A Engineering (1.68%), Allahabad Bank (1.35%), Alstom India (1.32%) and Aban Offshore (1.2%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Aanjaneya Lifecare (8.43%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (3.54%), Aarti Industries (2.27%), Action Construction Equipment (0.36%) and Trident (0.11%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Realty index was at 2,082.49, up by 45.86 points or by 2.25%. The major gainers were D L F (5.06%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (3.58%), Anant Raj (3.51%), Godrej Properties (0.73%) and Indiabulls Real Estate (0.28%).

The Power index was at 1,836.21, up by 19.00 points or by 1.05%. The major gainers were G M R Infrastructure (3.69%), Reliance Infrastructure (2.73%), JSW Energy (2.6%), Crompton Greaves (1.32%) and Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.02%).

On the other hand, the IT index was at 6,444.21, down by 33.47 points or by 0.52%. The major losers were Mahindra Satyam (0.7%), H C L Technologies (0.65%), Tech Mahindra (0.56%), Infosys (0.44%) and Mphasis (0.14%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,580 advances against 1,200 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Jet Airways (India) topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 530.00 million. It was followed by A B G Shipyard (Rs. 460.51 million), State Bank Of India (Rs. 434.50 million) and United Spirits (Rs. 309.99 million).

The volume chart was led by S E L Manufacturing Company with trades of over 5.74 million shares. It was followed by Indiabulls Power (4.22 million), Suzlon Energy (3.54 million) and Kingfisher Airlines (3.24 million).
